Protein is considered the pillar of any bodybuilders diet but with such a vast selection, from whey isolate to beef protein; which protein powder supplement should you pick? We have compiled a list of the most popular protein powder supplements out there to give you the basics on what you need to know to help you choose the best supplements for you.
Whey concentrate is the most common form of protein found in supplement shops, as it’s the cheapest and generally tastes the best. Whey concentrate contains around 70-80% protein plus lactose and fat, giving it a better taste than whey isolate. Whey concentrate is great for beginners trying to add extra protein to their diets, however it can be more difficult to digest causing bloating and gas.
Whey isolate is perfect for those on strict diets as it contains 90% protein with very low fat and lactose (milk sugar). Whey isolates are quick absorbing proteins, supplying the muscle the nutrients it needs quickly to help recover and grow. For those who have digestion problems with whey concentrate, whey isolate might be the choice for you due to its easy absorption. It does however generally come with a larger price tag.
Hydrolysate protein (also known as hydrolysed whey), is a pre-digested protein allowing fast absorption that can have a greater anabolic effect. Hydrolysed whey is the most expensive type of protein due to its high quality and will also be perfect for those who struggle with bloating from whey concentrate.
